In the decade since the heyday of the Tribes series, many of the elements that made those games so engaging have been widely incorporated into many multiplayer shooters. Team-based game modes, large maps spanning indoor and outdoor locations, varied classes with customizable loadouts, vehicles, and even jetpacks have become familiar over the years. These elements are all well executed in Tribes: Ascend, the new free-to-play incarnation of the classic franchise, though they no longer distinguish it from the pack. That distinction goes to the one element that no game has since replicated, the element that pervades every aspect of gameplay and makes Tribes: Ascend uniquely challenging and thrilling: speed.

When Eidos handed development of the Tomb Raider franchise to Crystal Dynamics, it was a risky but ultimately wise decision. The team managed to reinvent the series while staying true to its roots with Tomb Raider: Legend, while Tomb Raider: Anniversary built on solid foundations to reimagine Lara Croft’s original adventure. Tomb Raider Underworld is Crystal Dynamics’ third game in as many years, and the high work rate is starting to show. Lara may have plenty of new moves at her disposal, but little has been done to address the many camera and clipping issues still present.

One of the most successful video game series of all time returns from a hiatus with Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. This latest adventure starring modern-day adventuress Lara Croft sends her to Paris, Prague, and a number of dangerous, ancient, subterranean catacombs. As before, Lara will need to run, jump, climb, shoot, and think her way through various trials and tribulations, and certain death often lies at the bottom of a long drop that is just one miscalculated step away from where she needs to be. In development for years, this latest Tomb Raider was intended as a reinvention of the series, with a darker edge and all-new gameplay elements.
